Junior Year Planning

 

 

SEPTEMBER

 

  • Sign up for the PSAT during the month
  • Listen for announcements of College Reps to the Guidance Office
  • Attend local College Fairs (Old Saybrook, Guilford High Schools)
  • Fill out Job Shadow survey
  • Get involved in activities; genuine involvement in one is better that token participation in several
  • Clarify your career plans
  • Check high school courses.  Will you meet college requirements?

 

OCTOBER

 

  • PSAT’s are on the 3rd Saturday of the month
  • Job Shadow coordinator will match student to their job choice if possible
  • Develop lists of your interests

 

NOVEMBER

 

  • Make an appointment with your Guidance Counselor about your initial college/career interests
  • Put forth your best academic efforts in these last two years

 

DECEMBER

 

  • PSAT results are given to students as soon as they are available
  • Sign up for the College Life Panel discussion
  • Begin preparing for exams in January

 

JANUARY

 

  • Continue career exploration
  • Prepare for semester exams; colleges look at your junior grades

 

FEBRUARY

 

  • Plan senior year courses; do they meet colleges’ requirements?
  • Begin the college search


MARCH

 

·         Register for May and/or June SAT I and SAT II.

·         Ask your counselor about summer enrichment programs.

·         Consider SAT II Tests in courses you are taking this year.

·         Complete your senior schedule with your counselor.  Colleges expect rigorous senior year courses.

 

APRIL

 

·         Develop a preliminary list of colleges which interest you and go on the college’s websites or write to them for information.

·         Plan visits to colleges which interest you.

·         File for service academies & ROTC Scholarship applications.

·         Attend National College Fair in Hartford.

 

 MAY

 

·         Attend local college fairs.

·         Identify teachers whom you can ask for recommendations.

 ·         Take SAT I or SAT II.

 ·         Develop your criteria in choosing a college for example size, location, major, etc.

 

JUNE

 

·         Take SAT I or SAT II.

 ·         Continue the college search, and discuss with your counselor.

 ·         Plan summer visits to colleges.

 ·         If you do not have a job, try volunteering in your career area.
